Glasgow City Council and the University of Glasgow are today launching a ‘Gaelic in Glasgow’ survey; with the aim of gaining an up-to-date and deeper understanding of the Gaelic community in and around the city.

Building upon the city’s exceptional progress in the development of Gaelic to date, the data gathered in this community survey will play a pivotal role in supporting a sustainable future for Gaelic language and culture in Glasgow and will help shape effective development initiatives that reflect the increasingly diverse nature of the community.

The survey is aimed at individuals living in Glasgow and surrounding local authority areas who regularly access Gaelic activity in the city – but also organisations that are either based in Glasgow or which engage with Gaelic audiences in the city and surrounding areas.

Glasgow City Council’s Gaelic Project Officer, Donna MacLean said: “We are delighted to be working with Glasgow University in the creation of this consultation that we believe will be instrumental in helping to plan for future Gaelic development initiatives.

“Gaelic in Glasgow is continuing to thrive, with very healthy numbers attending Gaelic Medium Education; community learning expanding year on year, and a lively social scene.

“Glasgow City Council is committed to assisting with the development and promotion of the language in the city and building on the successes of the last ten years.

“We hope that this consultation process will allow us to further connect with the Glasgow Gaelic community to assist us in planning for future Gaelic development initiatives and highlight key priorities for our fourth Gaelic Language Plan from 2023 to 2027.

“Please take the time to complete the survey, regardless of your Gaelic ability. We want to hear from everyone who is connected to or has an interest in Gaelic language – your opinion matters, and we want to hear it.”

In addition to supporting development initiatives across the city, the survey results will also inform ongoing research considering support for minority language communities in urban settings.

Fiona Dunn, Gaelic Development Manager at The University of Glasgow said: “The findings of this consultation will make a significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding of minority language communities in urban contexts.

“Capturing meaningful data on the composition of the community today, will provide a foundation upon which informed and meaningful language planning can be based.

“Our partnership with Glasgow City Council is vitally important in this regard and provides a very real opportunity for measurable impact on the city’s Gaelic community.”

The survey covers a broad range of sub-themes from demographics and language proficiency to Gaelic education and broader cultural interests. While respondents are encouraged to complete the survey in line with their pre-COVID habits, there is also a section to capture the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the Gaelic community.

The creation of this survey has been made possible with the support of the Gaelic Language Act Implementation Fund (GLAIF) at Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

Steven Kellow, Funding and Projects Officer at Bòrd na Gàidhlig, said: “We are happy to support this survey through our GLAIF scheme and we are sure that this will support the council in using and promoting the Gaelic language in their work and in implementing their most recent Gaelic Language Plan.

“BnG’s GLAIF funding is available to all public authorities with a statutory Gaelic Language Plan and this time last year Glasgow City Council were successful in their application.  This year’s GLAIF scheme is open until 22 April 2021.”

The Gaelic in Glasgow consultation will be live from 9am on Monday, 19 April and will be open for three weeks. Until 10 May.

The survey can be accessed on both Glasgow City Council and Glasgow University’s websites listed below.

Building upon the findings of the survey, respondents will be invited to participate in focus groups where emerging themes will be discussed in more detail. Further information on these events will follow this initial consultation phase.
