Glasgow’s Clyde Tunnel Gets a Makeover: Offensive Graffiti to Be Removed.

Glasgow’s Clyde Tunnel has been marred by racist, homophobic, and misogynistic graffiti, creating an unwelcoming environment for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Offensive and vulgar language has been spray-painted on the tunnel walls, drawing numerous complaints from concerned citizens.

In a proactive response, Glasgow City Council has decided to close the southbound pedestrian and cycle path from 9 a.m. today until 1 p.m. tomorrow (May 10). This temporary closure will allow a cleanup crew to remove the distasteful graffiti and restore the tunnel’s appearance.

A local woman, who requested anonymity, expressed her dismay over the offensive language and the litter problem within the tunnel. She shared her concerns about the exposure of children to such vile words, including profanities and slurs. The 44-year-old woman also mentioned feeling unsafe while walking through the tunnel, as she believes it is inadequately monitored and maintained.

She stated, “If something happened to you in that tunnel, nobody would hear your screams. I regularly walk with keys in my hands when I’m walking past anyone because I think anything could happen to me, and nobody would know.”

The Clyde Tunnel has the potential to be a pleasant and safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists if it were properly supervised and maintained. The woman added, “When I see graffiti like that, it makes me sad and disappointed. I’m sad to think what drove those people to write those things.”

During the graffiti removal process, the northbound cycle path will remain open, minimizing disruption for travelers. This cleanup initiative is a positive step towards making the Clyde Tunnel a more welcoming and secure space for Glasgow’s residents and visitors.
