Best Coffee Shops in Glasgow 2026

Glasgow’s coffee scene is serious. Not in a snobby way, but in a “we actually care about what’s in the cup” way. The city has some of the best independent roasters and coffee shops in the UK. Chains exist here, obviously, but you’d be daft to bother with them when the independents are this good.

Here’s where to get the best cup of coffee in Glasgow right now.

1. Laboratorio Espresso (Best Overall)

Laboratorio Espresso on West Nile Street is the gold standard. It’s a tiny Italian-style espresso bar just round the corner from Queen Street Station. The focus is on the coffee and nothing else. They bring in beans from top European roasters and the baristas actually know what they’re doing. A flat white here will ruin you for coffee everywhere else.

There’s very little seating. A few stools at the counter and that’s about it. You’re meant to drink your espresso standing up, like they do in Milan. An espresso is about £2.80, a flat white around £3.50. It’s not a place to sit with a laptop for three hours. It’s a place to drink excellent coffee and get on with your day.

Where: 93 West Nile Street, City Centre, G1 2SH

2. The Steamie

The Steamie Coffee Roasters in Finnieston roast their own beans on site. You can actually watch them doing it. Since 2014, they’ve been building a reputation as one of Glasgow’s best specialty coffee spots and it’s well deserved. The espresso is consistently excellent and the filter options change regularly.

The space on Argyle Street is a good size. Plenty of room to work or just sit and watch Finnieston go by through the big windows. A flat white is around £3.50-4. They sell their beans too, so you can take a bag home.

Where: 1024 Argyle Street, Finnieston, G3 8LX

3. Papercup

Papercup on Great Western Road roasts their own coffee just round the corner on Belmont Lane. The quality shows. Espresso, pour-over, filter. All done with proper care. They use a Hario V60, AeroPress, and a La Marzocco, so whatever your preferred brewing method, they’ve got it covered.

The food is decent too. Brunch options, cakes, the usual. But it’s the coffee that keeps folk coming back. The space is bright and relaxed, good for working or meeting a mate. Flat white around £3.50-4.

Where: 603 Great Western Road, West End, G12 8HX

Byres Road in Glasgow's West End, close to Papercup and Thomson's coffee shops
The West End around Byres Road and Great Western Road is packed with top-quality coffee shops. You could do a proper caffeine crawl without leaving a half-mile radius.

4. Spitfire Espresso

Spitfire Espresso on Candleriggs has a World War II theme that sounds gimmicky but actually works. Model planes hang from the ceiling, there’s a red La Marzocco behind the counter, and the house blend is called Gunnerbean. It’s fun without being annoying about it.

They serve Thomson’s Coffee, one of Glasgow’s oldest roasters, and the quality is consistently solid. The space is open-plan with big windows. Good for people-watching in the Merchant City. Coffees from about £3-3.80.

Where: Candleriggs, Merchant City, G1 1NP

5. Cottonrake Bakery

Cottonrake makes this list because the coffee is good and the pastries are exceptional. You’re going for both. The almond croissants are legendary. Properly flaky, packed with almond cream, and big enough to count as breakfast. The espresso is well-made and the space in the West End townhouse has a proper cosy feel to it.

It’s a bakery first and a coffee shop second, but that’s fine. Sometimes the best coffee is the one you drink alongside the best pastry in the city. Coffee from about £3, pastries from £3.50.

Where: 205 Hyndland Street, Partick, G11 5QH

6. Gordon Street Coffee

Gordon Street Coffee is right next to Central Station, which makes it perfect for a quick stop before or after a train. The coffee is well above what you’d expect for a location that convenient. They do a big range of drinks and there’s a student discount, which keeps the uni crowd happy.

It’s not the most spacious place in the world, but for a solid flat white on the go, it does the job. The kind of reliable spot you end up visiting twice a week. Coffees from about £2.80-3.80.

Where: 79 Gordon Street, City Centre, G1 3SQ

7. Meadow Road

Meadow Road in Thornwood is the quiet achiever on this list. It’s in a residential area, away from the usual West End haunts, and that’s part of its appeal. They use Dear Green beans for espresso and rotate single-origin filter coffees weekly. The quality is consistently high and the atmosphere is genuinely relaxed. No rush, no pretension.

The food is good too. Simple but well-made brunch options and cakes. It’s the kind of place where you go for coffee and end up staying for lunch. Flat white around £3.50.

Where: 579 Dumbarton Road, Thornwood, G11 6HY

8. Grain and Grind

Grain and Grind has six locations across Glasgow now. They roast all their own coffee up in Inverness and have over 20 specialty roasts to choose from. That’s a lot. Their sister bakery supplies all the fresh bakes and sandwiches, which are a cut above your average coffee shop fare.

The consistency across branches is impressive. Whether you hit the West End location or the city centre, you’re getting the same quality. Some folk reckon they’ve expanded too fast. I reckon they’ve just got a good thing and they’re sharing it around. Flat white around £3.50-4.

Where: Multiple locations across Glasgow

George Square in Glasgow city centre
Glasgow city centre is home to Laboratorio Espresso, Gordon Street Coffee, and Spitfire Espresso, all within a 10-minute walk of George Square.

9. Thomson’s

Thomson’s has been roasting coffee in Glasgow since 1841. That’s not a typo. They’ve been at it for nearly 200 years. The latest project is a coffee shop partnership called 1841, just off Byres Road. They also supply beans to plenty of other shops on this list, including Spitfire. Their own espresso bar in Giffnock is worth the trip too.

The coffee is reliably excellent and there’s something satisfying about drinking from a roaster with that much history. Over 20 specialty coffees to choose from. Coffees from about £3-3.80.

Where: 1841 at Byres Road, West End / Fenwick Road, Giffnock

10. Dear Green

Dear Green is Glasgow’s most important roaster. Full stop. They supply beans to a huge number of the city’s best cafes, including Meadow Road. The roastery is based in the East End, and while it’s primarily a wholesale operation, they do tastings and events that are worth keeping an eye out for.

If you’ve had a great coffee in Glasgow, there’s a decent chance Dear Green roasted the beans. They take their name from Glasgow’s own nickname, “Dear Green Place,” which is fitting. They’re as much a part of the city’s coffee identity as any of the shops serving the stuff.

Where: Roastery in the East End. Check their website for tasting events.

Glasgow Coffee Tips

  • Skip the chains. With independents this good, there’s no excuse for a Starbucks.
  • Try filter coffee. Most of these places do excellent filter and it’s usually cheaper than espresso-based drinks.
  • Buy beans. Nearly all of these shops sell bags of their coffee. A bag of fresh beans from a Glasgow roaster makes a solid gift too.
  • Mornings are best. The coffee is freshest, the shops are quietest, and you’ll actually get a seat.

Glasgow punches well above its weight for specialty coffee. The roasters are world-class, the baristas care about their craft, and the price of a good flat white is still under a fiver. Long may that continue.
