Glasgow MSPs Push for Business Support in Cost of Living Crisis

GLASGOW MSPs have called on the Scottish Government to urgently address the growing challenges faced by local businesses amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. With rising energy bills, inflation, and reduced consumer spending, many businesses in the city are struggling to stay afloat. Hospitality venues, taxi services, and retail outlets are among the hardest hit, with some reporting significant drops in revenue and even closures.

The appeal for additional support comes as Glasgow’s economy faces unprecedented pressures. Hospitality businesses, which are vital to the city’s cultural and social fabric, have seen a sharp decline in footfall, while taxi drivers grapple with rising fuel costs and reduced demand. Retailers are also feeling the pinch, with many forced to cut back on staff or reduce opening hours to manage overheads.

Local MSPs argue that targeted interventions, such as tax relief, grants for small businesses, and energy bill subsidies, could provide much-needed relief. They emphasise that without immediate action, the city risks losing not only jobs but also the vibrant community spaces that make Glasgow unique. “This is about more than just businesses—it’s about protecting the livelihoods of thousands of people and preserving the character of our city,” one MSP stated.

Experts in urban economics and small business advocacy have echoed these concerns. Dr. Fiona MacLeod, an economist at the University of Glasgow, noted, “The cost of living crisis is hitting cities like Glasgow particularly hard. Targeted support for sectors most at risk could help mitigate the long-term damage to the local economy.”

For businesses and residents alike, the call for action is urgent. The Scottish Government has yet to announce specific measures, but MSPs are hopeful that their appeal will lead to concrete steps to support Glasgow’s struggling sectors. As the debate continues, many are watching closely to see how policymakers will respond to this pressing issue.
