A new taskforce has been set up to help the city’s social recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Social Recovery Taskforce, facilitated by the Community Planning Strategic Partnership as part of the council’s renewal and recovery programme, brings together representatives from a range of community planning partners, third sector and voluntary organisations, to look at how the city’s communities can rebuild and recover socially from the effects of COVID-19.

Co-chaired by Councillor Jen Layden, City Convener for Community Empowerment, Equalities and Human Rights, and Cllr Ricky Bell (City Treasurer), the Social Recovery Taskforce will provide leadership and direction, be responsible for defining and co-ordinating actions to be taken forward by all partners to address the societal impact of the Coronavirus beyond the recovery phase.

Councillor Jen Layden said:  “It’s clear that very few will emerge from the pandemic unscathed.  We know issues of poverty and inequality have been exacerbated within the city which we need to address as a matter of urgency.

“Our initial discussions with third sector organisations and equalities groups highlighted some key areas of concern – including tackling inequality, digital exclusion and food security – which the taskforce aims to address as we go forward.

“Recovering from this pandemic will take time and the creation of the social recovery taskforce is a step in the right direction. We all have a role to play and I look forward to working with our community planning partners and third sector organisations to make sure no area of the city is left behind.”

Membership on the Social Recovery Taskforce includes, although not restricted to, representatives from a wide range of recognised partners and community networks such as the Glasgow Disability Alliance; Glasgow Equality Forum; Glasgow Third Sector Interface Network; Violence Against Women Partnership and LGBT organisations.
