Glasgow’s first Domestic Abuse Strategy which focuses on improving services for people who are or have been affected by domestic abuse was welcomed by members of the Glasgow Integration Joint board (IJB).
The five-year strategy outlines what the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (GCHSCP) will do to ensure people affected by domestic abuse receive the best possible care – and how it will continue to involve people with lived experience of domestic abuse in the design and evaluation of domestic abuse services.
The development of the strategy included representation from services across the HSCP (Children’s, Adult, Older People, Homelessness and Justice services), and from partners including Education Services, Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership, Police Scotland and academic representation.
Pat Togher, Assistant Chief Officer, Public Protection and Complex Needs, said: “Domestic abuse is unacceptable. Tackling it is everybody’s responsibility.
“This has been a massive piece of work. We carried out an extensive engagement process which included staff from all areas, key partners, and people with lived and living experience of domestic abuse.
“Our data has highlighted domestic abuse accounts for about 45% of all child protection registrations, 10% of all presentations of homelessness, and accounts for about 25% of all adult protection referrals.
“We need to take a whole system approach in addressing domestic abuse. Glasgow’s people deserve to flourish in a safe environment without fear and where they are free from harm.
“We need to promote safety, support women, children and young people, and men from crisis to recovery, and ensure everyone has access to the right help and support when they need it.
“The strategy will make a difference for our service users and patients, for our own staff who provide services and support, and will make a difference to the way we engage and work with our partners in statutory and non-statutory sectors.
“All of this will ensure a more joined up, consistent, compassionate and timely approach to domestic abuse across all our services.”
A video has been produced showcasing the need for this strategy by telling the story of domestic abuse victims, those who harm through domestic abuse and highlighting some of the services that are available to those affected by domestic abuse.
