The latest figures show that Glasgow had a population of 621,020 in mid-2017, a rise of almost 6,000 from a year previously, and significantly above the number of 578,000 people living in the city in 2001.  This shows a rise of almost 7.5% in 16 years.

The figures – released today by the National Records of Scotland – show that Glasgow differed from the national trend in that most of this rise came from increases in the number of people aged between 16 – 64.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The latest figures for Glasgow’s population are very encouraging, and show a young and growing city.  What is particularly interesting is the rise in the amount of people of studying and working age moving to the city, which is a real sign of confidence in our future prospects, and bodes well for Glasgow’s economic growth.”
