THERE was just time for Theresa May to squeeze in one last humiliation before Christmas. Her latest attempts to win legal assurances from Brussels that the Northern Ireland backstop would be temporary were rejected late on Thursday. She made sure she was filmed having “robust” exchanges with Jean Claude Juncker, the EU Commission President, but no one was fooled. This wasn’t a “handbag moment” like Margaret Thatcher’s at Fontainebleau in 1984.
