Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes confessed that his team appeared ‘underprepared’ as they succumbed to a 3-2 friendly defeat against Ayr United at Somerset Park.
The match attracted an audience of over 3200 spectators for an action-packed encounter as both teams intensified their preseason training.
The game got off to a sluggish start but came into full swing on the 26th minute when Kilmarnock’s new goalkeeper Robby McCrorie failed to block a long-range shot from George Stanger.
Eight minutes post that, the hosts doubled their lead when Marco Rus penetrated a lethargic defense to score an angled shot.
The visiting team, slated to compete against Cercle Brugge in the Europa League in approximately 13 days, managed a score just before halftime. Kyle Vassell broke free but his shot was blocked by Harry Stone. However, the rebound landed with Brad Lyons who managed a successful shot to the top corner.
Kilmarnock began the second half on a high note with Danny Armstrong barely missing a header. However, the two-goal gap was soon restored when Anton Dowds scored a penalty after George Oakley was fouled by Joe Wright.
Robbie Deas shortened the lead with a stellar header before Bruce Anderson hit the crossbar as Killie looked for an equalizer, but Ayr managed to clinch victory in the Ayrshire derby.
McInnes remarked, “I think what it indicated was that Ayr is more prepared than us. They’ve clocked more time on the field and commenced training prior to us. Their competitive matchups start earlier.”
“At this phase of the season, it’s clear. I observed them playing against Glasgow‘s Celtic and noticed their direct gameplay.”
“They attempt to unsettle you and we seemed a little raw,” he added.
“The first goal was a slip, Robby acknowledges that himself and preseason is dedicated to rectifying such slips,” McInnes conveyed.
“Not only from him but from all players. The performances across the team have room for improvement. The second goal was particularly irksome. We had an experienced defense line but still ended up in a disadvantageous plight and allowed them to capitalize.”
“The third goal was not a penalty. I know preseason is for eliminating mistakes, but the referee was mistaken this time.” he added.
“I noticed improvement as the game progressed and saw instances of high-quality gameplay. It’s an additional step towards our desired performance level and it felt like a genuine game.” he concluded.
