Nursery Worker in Glasgow Found Drinking on the Job, Receives Warning for Inappropriate Conduct

A nursery worker in Glasgow faced disciplinary action after being found to have consumed alcohol while on duty and displaying improper behavior towards young children in her care. Rajinder Kaur, who was employed at Caldercuilt Nursery, a facility managed by Glasgow City Council in Summerston, was involved in several incidents between May 2019 and June 2021.

In one episode, Kaur forcefully guided a three-year-old boy to the ground and straddled him, holding him down while shouting, “Don’t you ever hit me again.” This confrontation left the child with both emotional and physical harm. Subsequently, Kaur escorted the child back into the nursery by lifting his arms above his head.

In November 2020, Kaur neglected to supervise a child in the playground, leading to the child being left unattended outdoors. Upon the children’s return to the nursery, Kaur failed to perform a headcount, and the child managed to leave the playground independently.

In June 2021, Kaur was caught lifting another child by the upper arm, resulting in a red mark and causing distress. Just a few days later, she was found to have consumed alcohol during her shift.

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) investigated these incidents and determined that Kaur’s behavior demonstrated a “loss of self-control” and a “disregard for the wellbeing of young children in her care.” Despite her previously unblemished record in the childcare sector, the SSSC deemed it necessary to take action to maintain public confidence in the profession.

Acknowledging Kaur’s cooperation with the investigation and some level of insight, the SSSC placed her on a warning period for three years. A Glasgow City Council spokesperson confirmed that Kaur had been dismissed following an internal investigation into her conduct.
