Boosting Glasgow’s Communities: UK Shared Prosperity Fund Allocates £6 Million for 17 Projects Focused on Health, Education, Sports, Arts, and More.

Glasgow City Council Approves £6 Million in Funding for 17 Community Projects

Today, Glasgow City Council announced the allocation of £6 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) to 17 projects throughout the city. This funding will be distributed through the Glasgow Communities and Place Fund, which is a component of the council’s proposals for the Communities and Place Investment Priority of the UKSPF.

After a rigorous selection process, 17 projects have been chosen to receive this funding. The projects span a wide range of areas, including sports, arts, culture, education, health, and social initiatives. Here are a few highlights:

  • Baltic Street Adventure Playground will receive £227,936 in funding from the UKSPF. The playground is designed to be a fun outdoor space for children in Dalmarnock, but it also addresses important issues like food poverty and social isolation. In addition to the playground, the project includes a food hub and programs for children and seniors.
  • Basketballscotland Limited will receive £271,659 to deliver a range of sports activities and training opportunities for people in Easterhouse. This project will improve participants’ physical, mental, and social well-being.
  • Bike For Good Limited will receive £354,172 for its Community Upskilling Project. This project will provide training and volunteering opportunities for people aged 16 and up to develop skills and confidence in cycling. Participants will learn bike mechanics and be involved in delivering various services, such as fixing their own bikes and providing cycle training.
  • Castlemilk Youth Complex will receive £204,077 for its Strength Through ART program. This initiative will help young people from deprived backgrounds develop the skills and qualifications they need to pursue careers in the arts, while also improving their mental health and wellbeing.
  • Centre for Contemporary Arts will receive £585,842 to deliver five different strands of community engagement and enrichment programs throughout Glasgow. These programs will promote social cohesion and inclusion through art and culture that is co-produced by local people.

These are just a few examples of the 17 projects that will receive funding from the UKSPF. The projects are diverse, but they all share a common goal: to improve the lives of people in Glasgow.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said, “These cultural, educational, health, and social projects will benefit many people and communities across Glasgow. The local organizations and partnerships that will deliver these partnerships will work closely with our communities to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from this funding.”

To maximize the budget and support as many projects as possible, the council recommended and accepted a slight overcommitment of £145,656 (2.4% greater than the overall £6 million available). This overcommitment is expected to be covered by underspends identified in some of the projects as they progress.

In conclusion, this £6 million investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a significant step forward for the communities of Glasgow. The 17 projects that will receive funding have the potential to make a real impact on the lives of people throughout the city.
