An award-winning film set in Glasgow is to have a sequel – over 25 years later. Featuring River City Stars.

Get ready to revisit the gritty and captivating streets of Glasgow once again, as the long-awaited sequel to the award-winning film, Small Faces, is finally in the works. First released in 1996, the original movie follows the story of the infamous Glasgow gang, the Tongs, during the 1960s. Filmed on location across the city and featuring an all-star cast, Small Faces helped launch the careers of Kevin McKidd, Laura Fraser, and Iain Robertson, who have since become household names.

The sequel, Smile, promises to be a standalone film that takes place 25 years after the events of Small Faces. Iain Robertson, who portrayed Stevie in the first movie, was curious about his character’s fate and wanted to explore it further. He reached out to the original director, Gillies MacKinnon, and scriptwriter, Billy MacKinnon, to bring the idea to life. The result is a thrilling and captivating movie that delves into the ghosts of the past and the secrets they hold.

Smile is not your typical sequel, as Gillies MacKinnon notes, “it is a different film, with a different tone and in a different era, but based upon the drama left off a quarter of a century earlier.” The film follows the story of Lex (played by Iain Robertson), who felt responsible for his brother’s murder at a Glasgow ice rink. Now in his 40s, Lex is faced with the impossible – his dead brother’s resurrection. Stephen Duffy, who played Bobby in Small Faces, is set to return in Smile, much to the delight of fans who were eager to see more of his character.

As a self-contained film, Smile promises to captivate both old fans and new audiences alike. With an exceptional cast and crew, including Kevin McKidd and Stephen Duffy, who both died in Small Faces, the film is set to be a riveting experience. As Kevin puts it, “it’s hugely intriguing to hear that there’s talk of my involvement,” and Stephen adds, “I’m absolutely up for haunting Iain!” With such a talented team behind the film, Smile is bound to be a hit, proving that some stories are worth revisiting, even after 25 years.
