Glasgow Physician Calls for Buffer Zones Around Hospitals to Protect Women Seeking Abortion Services.

Glasgow Children’s Hospital consultant Dr. Greg Irwin has urged Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf to implement buffer zones around hospitals, highlighting the urgent need for such measures to protect women seeking abortion services. Dr. Irwin criticized the anti-abortion group 40 Days for Life, accusing them of harassing and bullying women who visit the hospital for abortion-related healthcare.

The group recently concluded nearly six weeks of protests, with around 100 members gathering for their final vigil at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Dr. Irwin appealed to Yousaf, asking him to prioritize Green MSP Gillian MacKay’s buffer zone legislation. The doctor emphasized that implementing such a law would align Scotland with the rest of the UK, providing a safe space for women to access abortion services.

Dr. Irwin previously confronted the anti-abortion protesters in February, calling their demonstration “harassment” and expressing concern for the patients’ wellbeing. The group, which has ties to a US-based Christian organization, insists they are non-confrontational. However, critics argue their presence intimidates women attending difficult termination appointments.

Anti-Abortion Protestors outside QEUH this evening

Pro-choice advocates from the LGBTQ+ protest group Cabaret Against Hate Speech (CATHS) organized a counter-protest, displaying nearly 200 posters with messages supporting safe abortions and women’s rights. Although the police were called due to a noise complaint, the CATHS spokesperson expressed hope that this would be the last time 40 Days for Life could legally protest in such a manner.

Yousaf has already voiced his commitment to enacting buffer zone legislation, and Gillian MacKay has called for an end to the targeting of staff and patients at clinics offering women’s health care, including abortions. MacKay described the lantern-wielding protestors as “sickening” and said their actions have only strengthened support for her buffer zone bill. The legislation aims to protect women’s right to choose and ensure they feel safe while accessing healthcare. MacKay plans to work with the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government to expedite the introduction of safe access zones.
