Green Light for Next Chapter in Glasgow’s Athletes’ Village Story

The future of Glasgow’s Dalmarnock is looking brighter as a revised agreement paves the way for the commencement of Phase Two of the Athletes’ Village construction. The project, set to kick off later this year, will see 125 new homes springing up in the vibrant city district.

On April 27th, Glasgow City Council endorsed an amendment to the development contract between the council and City Legacy Limited. The adjustment means the next chapter of the Athletes’ Village will roll out in a single phase, rather than the originally intended two.

Under the initial plan, 49 residences would have been constructed in the first phase, followed by a further 76 in the second. The ‘SP’ site, previously owned by Scottish Power and due to be purchased by the council, was the primary factor behind the phased approach.

However, the ‘SP’ site is now readily available, prompting a commercially advantageous decision to start construction works in one cohesive phase.

The first phase of the Athletes’ Village, consisting of 700 flats and houses, was successfully completed in 2014, leaving a lasting mark on the cityscape.

Councillor Ruari Kelly, who heads the Neighbourhood Services and Assets at Glasgow City Council, lauded the Athletes’ Village as a pivotal development for Dalmarnock and Glasgow’s East End. He asserted that the project brought a mix of high-quality social rent and sale properties to the area, sparking the broader, ongoing rejuvenation of this part of the city.

Kelly expressed his enthusiasm for the approval of the revised development contract, highlighting the economic and social advantages this next phase will usher into Glasgow. With the construction of Phase Two of the Athletes’ Village now imminent, the city is set to experience a fresh wave of growth and progress.
