Tensions Soar at Glasgow Council Meeting Over Heated Exchange.

Council Meeting Erupts in Fiery Clash: “Let’s Settle This Outside”

An intense Glasgow council meeting reached a fever pitch as an SNP councillor faced accusations of telling opposition members to “pipe down.” The confrontation escalated when the SNP councillor invited a Labour member to “settle the issue outside.”

Labour Councillor Frank McAveety attempted to raise a point of order concerning the “conduct” of the full council meeting as it drew to a close. McAveety alleged to have “distinctly heard” SNP Councillor Graham Campbell “loudly instructing other members to ‘pipe down.'”

Despite the claim, no action was taken. McAveety then asked for guidance on how to address the situation, to which Campbell responded: “Let’s settle this outside.”

Councillor McAveety conveyed his concerns to the Lord Provost, characterizing the comments as “provocative” and the behavior as “unacceptable.” However, Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren advised him that the meeting had ended and recommended discussing the matter with the business managers.

Following the contentious gathering, the Labour group asserted that Councillor Campbell had told female councillors to “pipe down” and that the Lord Provost had dismissed a point of order. Councillor McAveety, Labour’s business manager, criticized the Lord Provost’s lack of intervention, pledging, “Glasgow Labour will pursue these matters further.”

In response to Councillor McAveety’s social media post, Councillor Campbell accused him of “desperately grasping at straws,” adding, “The meeting had already adjourned, and I extended the offer to discuss your concerns with me.”

The SNP group has opted not to comment on the matter at this time.

This heated exchange unfolded during a spirited debate on Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone enforcement, scheduled to commence in June. While Labour and Conservative councillors advocated for a one-year postponement, the SNP and Greens stood firm on the current timetable.
