Celtic Football Club could be in for a significant financial boost as reports emerge of a possible £50 million transfer deal involving their former player Jeremie Frimpong. Manchester United is said to be eyeing the Bayer Leverkusen full-back, and if the deal goes through, Celtic could double their transfer profit on Frimpong, thanks to a cleverly negotiated transfer clause.

Frimpong’s Rise: From Manchester City’s Youth Ranks to Bundesliga Stardom

Jeremie Frimpong, a 22-year-old full-back, began his professional journey in the youth ranks of Manchester City. In September 2019, Celtic signed him for a mere £350,000. His impressive performance at the Scottish club led to a move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021. The transfer deal, reportedly worth around £11.5 million, brought Frimpong to Germany.

Celtic’s Shrewd Business: A 30% Transfer Profit Clause

The Scottish club’s foresight is about to pay off, as they had negotiated a 30% transfer profit clause in Frimpong’s deal with Bayer Leverkusen. With Manchester United reportedly willing to pay more than £50 million to secure Frimpong’s services, Celtic stands to gain handsomely from this potential transfer.

Xabi Alonso’s Admiration and Leverkusen’s Stance

Bundesliga journalist Stefan Bienkowski reports that Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is a great admirer of Frimpong, and the German club is under no pressure to let their star player leave. Bienkowski added that Manchester United would have to agree to a £50 million-plus deal if they are serious about acquiring Frimpong.

The Potential £11.55m Windfall for Celtic

If Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen agree on a £50 million transfer deal for Frimpong, Leverkusen would make a £38.5 million profit on their initial investment. Consequently, Celtic would be due 30% of that profit (£11.55 million), effectively doubling their previous earnings from the player’s sale.

Positive Talks Between Manchester United and Frimpong’s Representatives

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plattenberg has reported that talks between Frimpong’s agent, Jeffrey Lemmert, and Manchester United have been “very positive.” Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, is said to be a fan of the young full-back. With a contract at Leverkusen until 2025, Frimpong is reportedly open to moving back to the Premier League this summer.

As the potential £50 million transfer deal unfolds, Celtic is poised to capitalize on their shrewd business acumen, doubling their profits and making the most of a promising player’s success.
