Glasgow Man Sentenced to Imprisonment for Assaulting Unconscious Woman
In a recent ruling, a 52-year-old man from Glasgow, John Thomson, received a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a woman more than 30 years his junior. The incident took place in July 2020 at Thomson’s Yoker residence, where the victim was inebriated and asleep.
Despite Thomson’s claim that the encounter was consensual, the jury at the High Court in Glasgow found him guilty. Judge Lady Stacey emphasized the victim’s inability to care for herself due to her intoxicated state, stating that Thomson was well-aware of this but chose to proceed with the assault.
The court learned that the victim sought rest in Thomson’s bed after feeling unwell from consuming alcohol. It was during this vulnerable state that Thomson exploited her, knowing she could not provide consent.
Authorities were notified of the incident after the victim left the premises, and her undergarments were discovered in the flat the following day.
Thomson expressed his frustration about the accusations to his attorney, Sarah Livingstone, insisting the victim initiated the encounter. However, the prosecution presented a lewd WhatsApp message in which Thomson bragged about the incident to a friend, undermining his claim of consensual relations.
Prosecutor Alexander Sutherland emphasized the evidence indicated an act of assault rather than consensual intimacy. Consequently, Thomson has been added to the sex offenders registry with an indefinite duration.
