Glasgow’s Taxi Knowledge Exam Faces Criticism from Industry Insiders Glasgow’s taxi industry representatives have expressed their disapproval over the recent consultation aimed at reviewing the city’s long-standing ‘Knowledge’ topographical test, calling it ‘preposterous.’

In Glasgow, aspiring Hackney Carriage taxi drivers must pass the Topographical Knowledge Test, which has been a crucial prerequisite for obtaining a taxi driver’s license for many years. The test, not mandatory for Private Hire Car (PHC) licenses, ensures that taxi drivers can effectively navigate the city when picking up passengers from street hails and taxi stands. The Knowledge encompasses the layout of city center roads and the location of prominent landmarks.

Despite the current scarcity of active drivers in the city, Unite Glasgow Cab Section remains committed to preserving the Knowledge test. On March 1, 2023, the Licensing and Regulatory Committee authorized the Director of Legal and Administration to conduct a comprehensive review of the Topographical Test requirement for taxi driver’s license applicants through a consultation process. The results of this review will be presented to the Committee for further deliberation.

In recent times, the Glasgow taxi industry has voiced concerns over the proposed review of the city’s ‘Knowledge’ topographical test. Advocates for maintaining the exam argue that it is vital for ensuring taxi drivers possess the necessary skills to navigate the city effectively. As the review process continues, it remains to be seen how the debate will ultimately impact the future of Glasgow’s taxi industry.
