The celebrated UCI World Cycling Championships’ second day unfolded in Glasgow, resulting in the city’s infrastructure coming to a near standstill. Much to the dismay of locals and business owners, the cycling extravaganza resulted in excessive traffic congestion and brought regular activities to a halt.
This grand cycling fest, hosting over 8,000 competitors, promises a spectacle of races across various categories until August 13, with the primary events held in Scotland’s thriving metropolis.
However, citizens expressed frustration to STV News about the lack of planning surrounding the event, pointing out the widespread traffic restrictions in Glasgow’s core.
Cabbie David Farrell gave a vivid account of the morning’s chaos, branding the situation as an “absolute disaster.” He commented, “We anticipated that the cycling championship would significantly impact the city center, considering the impending road closures. But today’s scenario surpasses all expectations of a nightmare.”
Farrell also expressed concern about the lack of arrangements for taxis and public transport at major city hubs like Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street. This lack of foresight hindered attendees from reaching the main arena and other parts of the city, he noted.
Despite the city center’s traffic mayhem, various events are scheduled at numerous venues across Glasgow – some located miles away, such as the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Emirates Arena, Glasgow Green, and Glasgow BMX Centre.
“There’s unprecedented congestion throughout the city,” lamented Farrell. “Commuting from the city’s north to the south has become impossible with all major motorway junctions blocked. The city center hotels are brimming with visitors, but reaching them has become an ordeal due to the road closures.”
City officials announced extensive road closures ahead of the championship’s grand opening. As weekend approaches, the traffic situation seems to be deteriorating, given the kick-off of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) seasons on August 5.
Notably, The Ladies Lounge salon on Maryhill Road was compelled to rearrange their entire Friday schedule after being ensnared in traffic for nearly two hours. In a plea on Instagram, the owner urged her clients to reschedule their appointments and lashed out at the Glasgow City Council for causing unnecessary distress to small businesses.
Adding to the chorus of discontent, Tantrum Doughnuts, a popular city center outlet, was compelled to cease operations on Friday morning due to the traffic restrictions. The doughnut shop had a particularly frustrating experience, as their staff spent three hours trying to deliver doughnuts to their store, despite being promised special access.
In response to the uproar, a Glasgow City Council spokesperson expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured they had reached out to the sub-contractors to clarify the road closure timings and barrier placements.
