Mortons Rolls Reopens With 110 Jobs Saved.

Morton’s Rolls, the beloved bakery in Drumchapel, Glasgow, is set to make a triumphant return after two weeks of darkness. Thanks to the hard work and perseverance of a consortium of investors represented by John McIlvogue, the factory’s assets have been taken over, and production is set to resume this weekend.

The news comes as a relief to the 230 employees who were given redundancy notices following the bakery’s closure on March 3. With the new ownership in place, around half of the workforce will be brought back immediately, with the others hopefully joining them in the near future, pending the availability of the right support.

Despite years of financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy bills, and contractual obligations to large supermarkets, Morton’s Rolls has remained a beloved brand in Glasgow, and its rolls have been sorely missed during the past few weeks. But now, with the return of production, the people of Glasgow can rejoice and look forward to the return of their favorite morning rolls.

John McIlvogue is proud to have been part of the effort to save the factory and its jobs, but he’s also honest about the challenges ahead. The business is undoubtedly viable, thanks to its world-class product and exceptional workforce, but the factory itself is antiquated and needs a serious overhaul. He hopes to receive support from the Scottish Government and its agencies to make the necessary changes and ensure Morton’s Rolls can thrive for generations to come.

Paul Sweeney MSP, who has been instrumental in securing commitments from the First Minister that her government will support the bakery, also expressed his relief at the news. He praised John McIlvogue’s commitment to bringing Morton’s back to life and saving the jobs of its excellent workforce, and he’s confident that with the right support, Morton’s will outlive all of us.

The community of Drumchapel has shown incredible support and affection for Morton’s Rolls during these difficult times, proving the power of this brand and its potential for the future. The return of production this weekend is a cause for celebration, and we can all look forward to enjoying our favorite morning rolls once again.
