How we checked these chippies

We went back through every chippy in the June version of this guide and checked it against its own website: the address, the opening hours and the prices. A lot had changed. One shop was destroyed in a fire.

Half the old web addresses no longer work or now belong to unrelated sites. Several well-known names have no website we could read, so those have gone. We then added the places below that do have one.

Every place has a Pass on the official food hygiene register, with the latest inspections running from April 2022 to October 2026. This was a desk check, not a taste test, so the picks lean on awards, official records and what each shop says on its own site. Several menus aren’t dated, so treat prices as a guide.

Best fish and chips in Glasgow city centre

The city centre has fewer chippies with a website we could check than you’d think. Blue Lagoon is the one we could pin down from its own site.

Blue Lagoon, Queen Street

Photo: Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is the Glasgow chain that started on Sauchiehall Street in 1975. The Queen Street shop is one of its late-night spots in the centre. You can sit in or take away, and there’s wifi.

  • Have: haddock in batter, or the special in breadcrumbs. The fish tea comes with chips, bread and butter and a cup of tea. Its site calls the menu a sample, so not every shop has everything.
  • Price: not on its website, so check before you order.
  • Open: Monday to Thursday and Sunday 9am to 1am. Friday and Saturday 11am to 5am.
  • Good for: a late feed after a night out, or a quick lunch near George Square.
  • Where: 151 Queen Street, G1 3BJ. bluelagoonfishandchips.co.uk

Its website also lists shops on Argyle Street and Renfield Street with similar late hours. The Blue Lagoon on Gordon Street beside Central Station was destroyed in the Union Street fire in March 2026. The site still lists it, so check a shop is open before you travel.

Tips for ordering fish and chips in Glasgow

  • Supper or single? A supper comes with chips and a single is just the fish. Coia’s lists both, at £8.75 for a single and £11.95 for a supper, and Mario’s has a haddock single at £9.50 and a supper at £12.95.
  • Check the size. Some shops sell by the piece and some by size. Catch in Giffnock does one, one and a half or two pieces of haddock, Batter Up and Kadir’s do one piece or two, and Hook and Catch and Mother Hubbard’s do regular and large.
  • Take it away. Takeaway can be cheaper. Coia’s charges £11.95 for a fish supper to take away and £14.95 to eat in, though the sit-in plate comes with peas.
  • Not keen on batter? Ask for breadcrumbs. Catch charges 50p extra for panko, Old Salty’s charges £1 and Coia’s special, which is haddock in natural breadcrumbs, is £1 to £2 more. Other shops sell a “special” fish for a bit more, including Chip Chik Inn (50p) and Mario’s (about £1.50), so ask what you’re getting.
  • Try the lunch menu. Chip Chik Inn has a weekday lunch menu from 11am to 2pm, with a mini fish supper at £5.80, and Jaconelli’s has a lunchtime menu too. Catch in Giffnock’s takeaway menu has fish and chips at £6.95 until 4pm.
  • Book ahead. Catch in Giffnock recommends reserving a table on its website, and Old Salty’s recommends booking for the Italian restaurant upstairs.
  • Check the day. Crabshakk Botanics is shut on Mondays and Catch in Netherlee might be too, as its website gives two answers. Jaconelli’s doesn’t open until 3pm on Sundays, and Crabshakk’s hours change over Christmas.
  • Gluten-free or vegan. Catch in Netherlee has gluten-free haddock on its takeaway menu, and Old Salty’s has a gluten-free menu with a separate fryer. Catch in Giffnock’s takeaway menu lists a vegan sausage and vegan chicken strips. Our vegan restaurants guide has more.

G’s Fish & Chips in Tradeston, Golden Chip in Croftfoot and Remo’s Fish & Chips in Nitshill are on the list too. We haven’t checked those against their own websites, so they’re not in the guide. The winners are announced at a gala in Glasgow on Monday 9 November 2026.

What happened to the Blue Lagoon at Central Station?

The Gordon Street shop was destroyed in the Union Street fire, which started on 8 March 2026. The Union Corner building was demolished later that month. Blue Lagoon’s Queen Street shop is still on its website, with opening hours.

Is The Chippy Doon The Lane still open?

We couldn’t confirm it. Its old website address now shows an unrelated site, and we couldn’t find a new one, so we’ve taken it off the list. “Doon” is Scots for down, so the name means the chippy down the lane.

Why aren’t Philadelphia, University Cafe and Merchant Chippie on the list?

They’re well known, but none of them has a website we could find, so we couldn’t check their prices or opening hours. We’d rather leave a place out than guess.

Run a chippy in Glasgow and want to be featured? We do clearly labelled sponsored features for £50 a year. Here’s how it works.
