Celtic Women’s Coach Applauded for Exemplary Conduct Following Rangers Coach Clash, Receives Personal Apology.
Celtic women’s team manager, Fran Alonso, was lauded by the club’s top brass, including chairman Peter Lawwell and CEO Michael Nicholson, for his admirable behavior in the wake of a contentious incident involving Rangers coach Craig McPherson. The confrontation occurred after a heated match between the SWPL rivals at Broadwood Stadium last month.
McPherson was handed a six-match suspension for his unprovoked headbutt on Alonso. The Celtic manager gracefully sidestepped questions regarding the severity of the penalty, preferring to concentrate on his squad’s pursuit of the championship title.
Alonso expressed gratitude for the support he received from the club’s hierarchy: “The day following the incident, our CEO, chairman, and numerous directors contacted me to convey their pride in my conduct, as well as that of my players. They assured me they had my back, which is what truly matters to me.”
Alonso also revealed that McPherson had privately apologized to him, acknowledging that neither Alonso nor Celtic were at fault. The Celtic coach emphasized his readiness to move past the event and direct all attention to the team’s performance on the field.
Yesterday, Celtic narrowed the gap with SWPL frontrunners Glasgow City to a mere five points, securing a 4-2 victory against Leanne Ross’ squad at Petershill Park. This win also allowed them to maintain a one-point lead over Rangers. Meanwhile, the Light Blues triumphed 5-0 over Partick Thistle earlier in the day at the same venue.
Focusing on his team’s success, Alonso remarked, “I was solely concerned with our match and earning those three points. Our performance yesterday was truly exceptional.”
