The Armed Forces Day flag ceremony is held annually to signal the city’s forthcoming Armed Forces Day Parade when the Lord Provost, in her role as Lord Lieutenant, takes The Salute.

The Parade will pass through George Square on Saturday 30 June from 11 am.

At Monday’s Flag Raising ceremony the Depute Lord Provost will welcome Commander Gary Mills (Royal Navy), Lieutenant Colonel Rory Shannon (Army) and Squadron Leader Archie McCallum (Royal Air Force). They will be joined by former Councillor Phil Green, the city’s Veterans Champion.

The Lord Provost said: “Glasgow’s Armed Forces Day is always a wonderful occasion. This city takes great pride in supporting its military personnel and veterans.

“Glasgow was the first local authority in Scotland to hold an Armed Forces Day and we strengthened this support by signing up to the Armed Forces Community Covenant.

“I’m delighted to take the opportunity to welcome our armed forces and their families to Glasgow and to express our gratitude for their service and bravery.”

“These events are appropriately, always held in George Square. Home to the city’s Cenotaph – a memorial to men who lost their lives in the First World War.”
