Yes, Glasgow City Council deals with rats and mice in homes, and it treats live wasp nests from June to September for £116.50 including VAT. It doesn’t treat bed bugs or other insects, birds, squirrels or other animals. You report rats and mice on the council’s online form. For wasp nests and any other pest question, phone 0141 287 1059.

Last checked: 26 October 2026.

The council’s price list has no charge for treating rats or mice in your home. The only charge it lists for pest control is the wasp nest fee, plus a separate hourly rate for businesses. Here’s what it does and doesn’t cover.

Rats and mice in your home

The council investigates and treats mice when they’re indoors at a home. It does the same for rats, indoors or outdoors at a home. It also says it works with property managers to sort out whatever is causing the infestation. That matters if the problem comes from a shared close, bin store or the building itself.

How to report rats or mice

  1. Use the council’s online form for mice or rats. It’s for homes only.
  2. The form is in four parts and starts with your contact details. Fill it in and send it.
  3. If you’d rather talk to someone, or you’ve a question the form doesn’t cover, phone 0141 287 1059.

The council’s page doesn’t say how long a visit takes to arrange, so we can’t give you a time. If rats or mice are getting worse while you wait, phone the number above and say so.

Who counts as a home

The service is for domestic properties. It doesn’t apply to charity accommodation, HMOs (houses in multiple occupation), holiday lets or any other commercial property. A rented flat or house is a domestic property, so you can report it yourself.

Wasp nests

The council offers a wasp nest service to Glasgow residents between June and September. It costs £116.50 including VAT. You can’t book it on the online form. Phone 0141 287 1059 and arrange a visit.

The council sets some rules:

  • You pay the fee and it’s non-refundable.
  • If an officer inspects and finds bees, they won’t treat the nest and you can’t get the money back. Bees aren’t something the council deals with.
  • The exact spot of the nest has to be known, visible and easy to get to.
  • The nest can be no more than 20 feet off the ground.

So if you’re not sure whether it’s wasps or bees, get a good look from a safe distance first. Don’t poke at it. Outside June to September, or if the nest is too high or hidden, the council’s service won’t fit and you’ll need a private pest controller.

What the council doesn’t treat, and what to do instead

The council says it doesn’t provide a service for:

  • Bugs and insects, which includes bed bugs.
  • Birds, bird feeding, or proofing buildings against birds.
  • Other animals, such as foxes, moles, rabbits, bees and deer. Squirrels aren’t named, but the same line covers any other animal.
  • Pest problems in non-residential properties.
  • Open spaces or private land, unless the council owns it.

To be plain about bed bugs: the council doesn’t treat them, so don’t wait on a council visit. Here’s what to do instead.

  • Hire a private pest controller. Get two or three quotes and ask for the price in writing before anyone starts. We haven’t put a figure on it because costs vary with the pest and the size of the job.
  • If you rent, tell your landlord or letting agent as soon as you spot a problem, and keep a copy of what you sent.
  • If you own a flat in a shared building, tell your factor or property manager.

Money tight? Pest control bills can hit hard. Our cost of living guide has the day-to-day costs of living in the city.

If you rent

Report rats or mice to the council yourself, and tell your landlord or letting agent too, since they’re often the ones who can fix how the pests are getting in. For deposits, repairs and what you’re owed as a tenant, see our renting in Glasgow guide.

Businesses

The council’s service page says the rat and mice service doesn’t apply to commercial property. Its 2026/27 Book of Charges still lists “Rats/Mice (Commercial)” at £71.50 per hour. If you run a business, phone 0141 287 1059 to ask whether the council can help before you book anyone. You can read the rates in the council’s Book of Charges for environmental protection.

Other council reports

Pests are one of several things you can report to the council. Potholes, fly-tipping and the rest are in our report a problem guide. New to the city and still finding your feet? Our moving to Glasgow guide covers the basics. The council’s own page is Report a Pest Control Problem.
