Meghan Markle’s relationship with Kate Middleton, despite the common element of both having married into the Royal Family, initially got off on the wrong foot.
Both women entered royal life from humble beginnings, compared to their husbands, and they faced intense public scrutiny as part of the world’s most famous families.
Their vastly different personalities and outlooks added fuel to the fire, leading to significant tensions between the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales.
In his explosive memoir “Spare,” Harry documented several incidents reflecting this cold relationship. One example is Meghan’s disagreement with Kate over bridesmaid dresses ahead of his wedding, which left Meghan in tears.
But the two women, encouraged by their husbands, had a frank conversation after the Sussexes’ honeymoon which, as Harry recalls, was so intense that Kate’s fingers turned white from tension.
According to Harry, Kate requested an apology from Meghan for having made a comment about her pregnancy-induced “baby brain.” Meghan did apologize and explained that it was simply her talking style with friends.
However, a turning point in their relationship came when, as Harry affirms, his brother William pointed at Meghan and told her off in a rather harsh manner.
The incidents described in “Spare” followed shortly after Meghan offered her unique perspective on Kate during her and Harry’s Netflix docuseries.
Meghan was “surprised” by the continued formality of the Royal Family even behind closed doors.
During Episode two of the six-part Harry & Meghan docuseries, she recalled her first meeting with Kate.
“When Will and Kate visited, meeting her for the first time, they came for diner, I was in ripped jeans and without shoes, being always a hugger, which I didn’t realize was quite shocking for many British people,” she said.
The memoir “Spare” by Prince Harry is available for purchase on Amazon.
