Glasgow’s Chart-Topping Artist Struggles to Renovate £1.6m Countryside Home
Popular singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi finds himself in an unexpected predicament as he attempts to renovate his £1.6 million countryside farmhouse just outside Glasgow. The multi-platinum artist, best known for his heart-wrenching hit “Someone You Loved,” purchased the sprawling property three years ago on the advice of his friend and fellow musician Ed Sheeran. However, the idyllic farmhouse quickly revealed its less-than-charming quirks, including a persistent smell of cigarette smoke and pet odours that Capaldi described as “a nightmare.”
Disheartened by the outdated interior and the lingering scents, the 26-year-old decided to temporarily relocate to a city apartment. Now, his once-grand farmhouse stands stripped down to its bare bones, a shell of its former self, as Capaldi grapples with the challenge of finding a construction team willing to take on the extensive renovation. Despite his willingness to pay, multiple builders have turned down the project, leaving the property in limbo.
During a recent interview on US radio, Capaldi opened up about the financial strain of the refurbishments, quipping that the success of his upcoming second album, set for release in May, would be crucial to funding the project. He candidly described his current living situation as “squalid,” highlighting the frustrations of dealing with a seemingly endless stream of setbacks.
Adding to the drama, Capaldi’s close friend Ed Sheeran has proven to be both a help and a hindrance. Sheeran initially offered to buy the problematic property, but according to Capaldi, the offer has since gone unanswered. “He’s been radio silent since,” the singer revealed, leaving him to navigate the renovation challenges on his own.
Capaldi’s vision for the farmhouse is nothing short of ambitious. His dream renovation includes a luxurious extension featuring a swimming pool, spa, sauna, and changing rooms. He also plans to transform the former stables into a fully equipped home gym, alongside a state-of-the-art media room, a spacious master bedroom, and a modern kitchen. However, with builders in short supply, these plans remain firmly on the drawing board.
As Capaldi gears up for the release of his new album, “Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent,” he’s currently touring the US, showcasing his signature blend of humour and heartbreak. Fans eager to learn more about the man behind the music can watch the recently released Netflix documentary, “How I’m Feeling Now,” which delves into Capaldi’s mental health journey and the pressures of sudden fame.
