Outrage over Alleged Excessive Use of Force by Scottish Officer on School Boy

In a shocking event that took place at Smithycroft Secondary School in Glasgow on Wednesday, April 26, a schoolboy sustained a head injury after a law enforcement officer forcefully wrestled him to the ground. This incident unfolded after a minor altercation between two male students.

The boy’s father was left feeling appalled and distressed after witnessing the unsettling footage. He expressed deep dissatisfaction with the officer’s handling of the situation and has formally lodged a complaint with Police Scotland against what he perceives as an overuse of force.

In an interview with the Daily Record, the 40-year-old father articulated his dismay. “The footage left me reeling. To see someone, particularly an officer of the law, manhandle a child in such a manner, and more so when it’s your own, is profoundly disturbing. The officer’s behavior seemed to be an exercise in power, which I find absolutely appalling,” he said.

The video, which has now been obtained by the Record, shows the tail end of the scuffle between the two boys. The parents were alerted to the incident by a phone call from their other son. The father recalls the confusion and anxiety in the moments following the incident, particularly the delay in being allowed to see his injured son, who was visibly shaken and complaining of head and neck pain.

In a meeting with the headmaster, the incident was discussed with a focus on the physical altercation between the students. The father, while supporting the school’s zero tolerance policy towards violence, emphasized his son’s well-being and his concerns over the force used by the police officer.

The father recounted his interaction with the officer, who, according to him, offered inconsistent reasons for his actions. “First, he claimed my son had initiated physical contact, which he later changed to a pre-emptive action, fearing my son might throw another punch,” the father explained. The officer’s justification didn’t sit well with the parent, who questioned the appropriateness of the use of such force on a young student.

A police insider expressed concerns over the incident, stating that officers are trained to handle individuals in a more controlled manner, which did not seem to be the case in this instance. In an official statement, a Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed the receipt of the complaint and ensured ongoing investigations. They also revealed that a 41-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy had been charged in relation to the incident.

Glasgow City Council echoed their commitment to maintaining a violence-free environment in their schools and assured that appropriate actions have been taken in response to this incident.
