Merck’s Expansion in Scotland: A New Chapter in Pharma Growth.

Merck, the renowned pharmaceutical leader, has unveiled an ambitious expansion plan in Scotland, promising an influx of nearly 500 jobs and fuelling the local economies of Glasgow and Stirling. This strategic move, backed by a hefty £30m investment, is set to strengthen its existing workforce, propelling the total number to over 1,200.

The expansion plan includes the construction of a cutting-edge 1,200 sq m facility in Glasgow, which will serve as a hub for molecular biology and sequencing services. This initiative aligns with Merck’s recent global expansions, including testing facility enhancements in Maryland, USA, and Shanghai.

David McClelland, the dynamic leader at the helm of Merck’s Scottish sites, expressed pride over their growing biosafety testing services. He acknowledged, “Our sites in Glasgow and Stirling have been witnessing robust, double-digit growth over the past few years. This investment is a testament to Merck’s confidence in Scotland and a tribute to our dedicated on-site teams.”

With its roots embedded in life science, healthcare, and electronics, Merck has a staggering workforce of more than 64,000 worldwide. The latest investment in Scotland is a strategic response to the rising global demand for biosafety testing services.

Biosafety testing is an indispensable part of the drug development and manufacturing process. It ensures the safety and efficacy of drugs while complying with regulatory requirements. Through this expansion, Merck aims to meet the growing demand for these crucial services, contributing significantly to the global pharmaceutical industry.
