Up to £1.4million in funding for Possilpark community hub approved by Council

Glasgow City Council today (3 June) approved up to £1.4million in funding to help develop a community hub in Possilpark.

The funding from the council will support the creation of a new £2.9million community hub building to be run by the Possilpark People’s Trust, an organisation which has for some time held aspirations to have a community-run hub offering a range of services for the people of the area.  The Trust has raised £1.575million in funding from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund and The Robertson Trust.

Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life officers have worked together with the Possilpark People’s Trust to make sure that the new hub will be accessible to a wide range of organisations and deliver as many services as possible to the local community.

The creation of this hub aligns with the city council’s ambitions to support local community-run services, with the building to be constructed in an area of Glasgow identified as a priority for a community hub.  These factors mean that the proposal was one the council could approve.

Today’s funding announcement by the city council means that the project’s funding gap – which if not met, risked secured funding being withdrawn – has now been addressed.  The project can now move to the construction phase.

The Trust recently completed a community asset transfer for Possilpoint Community Centre and red blaes pitch.  The Trust will utilise HubWest Scotland as their development partner for the design and of the new hub building, for which plans are already well advanced.

Councillor Kenny McLean, City Convener for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Public Realm, said: “The approval of this funding by the council will allow the construction of the Possilpark Community Hub to begin, a project which will deliver community services to local people in a purpose-built building.  We can look forward to contributing to the success of this community-led model in Possilpark and other neighbourhoods across Glasgow.”
