Having stepped away from royal responsibilities and moved to the US, Prince Harry has indeed made enormous life changes. Born and nurtured within the strict confines of a royal institution, Harry’s familiar world was characterised by a stringent hierarchy and his unique role in it. Similarly, his career in the Armed Forces ingrained in him the significance of order and discipline. Although he stepped down from his official duties, the Duke kept participating in several family events, one of which revealed to him the harsh reality of his reshaped position within the family, a royal expert states.
The aforementioned event was the National Service of Thanksgiving, a significant part of the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in 2022. This marked the first event attended by Harry and his wife, Meghan, since their departure from the Royal family and their revealing interview with Oprah Winfrey, together with Prince William and Kate.
The service took place at the historic St. Paul’s Cathedral, the same site that witnessed the marriage of William and Harry’s parents 41 years ago, according to reports sourced from the Mirror.
The seating arrangement separated the couples, with Kate and William taking the front row alongside then-Prince Charles and Camilla. This displayed a sharp contrast to Harry and Meghan, who were placed next to their cousins, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, along with their partners Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank.
Writing for the Mail, Richard Kay suggested that this arrangement underscored the “public revelation of Harry’s descent in the royal hierarchy,” referring to Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate as the “real stars of the event. “
He further stated, “As non-working royals, they are now essentially in the second division. Although they didn’t share the coach bringing in minor royals who likewise do not have official duties, such as Princess Michael of Kent’s son Lord Frederick Windsor, they were right behind them.”
Kay also mentioned that the stark reality of Harry’s transition must have hit him hard after witnessing a long 19-minute wait before William and Kate arrived to take their seats at the event.
Two years after this incident, there seems to be no significant progress in bridging the gap between the two brothers, which became apparent during the commemoration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.
The subsequent death of their grandmother brought them together under more solemn circumstances. However, the release of Harry and Meghan’s six-part Netflix documentary series, coupled with Harry’s revealing memoir Spare, appears to have further strained the relationship between the brothers.
Following the news of Kate’s cancer treatment, reports suggest that Harry and Meghan have privately reached out to the Wales family. Publicly, they have supported Kate’s call for privacy during her treatment and recovery phase. Still, this gesture failed to bring about a meeting between the brothers during Harry’s recent visit to the UK for the 10th Anniversary of the Invictus Games, leaving unanswered questions about their potential reconciliation.
