City considering how best to recognise Armed Forces

Glasgow is taking a fresh look at how it marks Armed Forces Day.

Members today backed a motion by Cllr Tony Curtis, amended by Cllr Malcolm Balfour, seeking to ensure the city has an opportunity to thank those who service in the Forces and military veterans.

Up until last year, the city had regularly hosted an Armed Forces Day event in George Square – however, this did not take place in 2017 after the Ministry of Defence withdrew in favour of a single, national celebration.

A working group is now looking at how best to celebrate the city’s relationship with the Forces in future.

Cllr Curtis said: “I look at America and I’m amazed at how they recognise their veterans and their serving military, relative to how we do.

“As a number of members noted today, the Ministry of Defence has a big responsibility – but maybe local and national governments can add something.”
