Meghan Markle recently commemorated her 43rd birthday, and her husband, Prince Harry, is expected to have given her a distinctive and considerate gift, characteristic of his attention to detail in present choices.

The Duke of Sussex’s gift-giving practice includes presents like a stunning silver photo frame containing an endearing snap of their son Archie.

However, one gift from the past ended up causing a stir in the royal circles, resulting in Meghan having an awkward conversation with Buckingham Palace officials.

When Harry and Meghan were just in the dating phase, Harry expressed his love by gifting Meghan a bespoke piece of jewellery.

This jewellery piece was a $300 valued 14-carat gold chain by Maya Brenner, embellished with charming initials ‘M’ and ‘H’.

The sight of Meghan flaunting the necklace openly reportedly stirred up some unease within the Palace corridors.

The unofficial biography ‘Finding Freedom’, penned by authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, offers a glimpse into the incident. They wrote about how a palace aide warned the Duchess of Sussex against wearing the necklace due to the ensuing media frenzy.

The authors mentioned “She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images – and new headlines”.

This unexpected phone call apparently left Meghan emotionally charged, responding barely during the incident.

The book detailed: “After hanging up, she felt frustrated and emotional. While she knew the aide had good intentions, the surreal experience of having someone from her boyfriend’s office tell her what kind of jewellery to wear or not smile at a photographer was too much.” The now Duchess of Sussex was in a tough position; as she perceived it, no matter what she did, it would be considered wrong. She purportedly told a friend: “I can’t win. They make it out as if I’m to blame for these pictures, that I’m as if I’m encouraging them, that even my acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message.”

The Royal Family’s reaction to the necklace upset the Duchess, triggering hopes that Harry’s recent birthday gifts won’t invite similar controversy.

However, Meghan seems to have moved beyond worrying about the royal’s opinions.

After less than two years of marriage, Harry and Meghan decided to step back from their royal responsibilities in 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California, US.
