If your child’s school is outside Glasgow City

These dates are for Glasgow City Council’s schools. Nearby councils set their own dates, so they can differ from Glasgow’s. Check your own council’s page:

Private schools set their own dates too. Ask the school, or look at its website.

What’s on in the school holidays

Glasgow’s Holiday Programme is the council’s free option. Community organisations run activities for children and young people aged 0 to 18, with free food provided. You get in touch with the organisation in your area, and the council publishes a list of them for each programme. In 2025/26 it ran in the summer, October and spring holidays. Christmas isn’t on that list.

For the October 2026 break, the council said to check with each organisation which days it was open. Find the current list on the council’s Glasgow’s Holiday Programme page.

For days out, these are the pages to start with:

Help with costs

The council’s term dates page links to a Support for Families PDF. The council says it covers some of the financial support available to families on a low income with children at school, and how to apply. Read it for the full list. Two of the main ones are below, from mygov.scot.

Free school meals

Pupils in primary 1 to 5 at council-run schools get a free lunch in term time, whatever the family income. From primary 6 and through secondary it depends on benefits, such as Universal Credit (where monthly earned income is no more than £995) or Pension Credit. If you get a qualifying benefit, you can also apply to your council for help during school holidays. For that, you need to apply for each child, including those in primary 1 to 5. Details are on the mygov.scot free school meals page.

School clothing grant

Every council pays at least £120 for each primary-age child and £150 for each secondary-age child. Who qualifies and how much you get depends on your council. You apply to your local council, and mygov.scot says most councils take applications from July until the end of March. Start at the mygov.scot school clothing costs page.
